Backup restore
Recover a virtual machine from a backup by choosing a restore point and running a restore task.
Backup restore
Purpose
- Recover a virtual machine from a previous backup job.
- Choose the exact restore point to recover from.
- Restore into a chosen compute pool and storage pool as a new VM.
Prerequisites
- Minimum permission to run a restore: dataprotection.backups.restore.create
- Permission to view backup jobs: dataprotection.backups.jobs.read
- At least one completed backup job exists for the VM.
Choose a restore point
Restores are launched from a backup job, so start from a VM's backup history.
- Open Compute → Virtual Machines, open a VM, then select its Backup tab (or open Data Protection → Backups, open a policy, and select the Jobs tab).
- Review the Backup Job History timeline, where each point represents a backup job coloured by status (success, failed, partial or running).
- In the Backup Jobs table, identify the completed job you want to recover from.
- Expected result: you have identified the restore point (backup job) to recover from.
Run a restore
- From the chosen backup job, select Restore to open the restore page pre-filled with that job's context.
- Enter a Restore VM Name and an optional VM Description.
- Select the Compute Pool and the Storage Pool for the restored VM.
- Set the Initial State to Stopped or Running.
- Select Restore.
- Expected result: a restore task is queued and the restored VM appears as a new entry in Virtual Machines; track progress in Task Manager (top bar).
Best Practices
- Always start a restore from a backup job entry; opening the restore page directly leaves it without a job context.
- A restore creates a new VM and never overwrites the source VM.
- Restore into a storage pool that supports VM disks.
- Leave the Initial State as Stopped to inspect the restored VM before powering it on.
- Verify the restore task completes in Task Manager.
