Disks
Provision virtual disks, attach them to VMs, and grow them as workloads need more space.
Disks
Purpose
- Create virtual disks and attach them to a VM.
- Increase (grow) an existing disk's size.
- See each disk's storage pool placement, size, and attached VM.
- Remove disks that are no longer needed.
Prerequisites
- Minimum permission to view: compute.disks.read
- To create a disk: compute.disks.create
- To edit or resize a disk: compute.disks.update
- To delete a disk: compute.disks.delete
- At least one storage pool that accepts VM disks must exist before you can create a disk.
- Disks live on storage pools; disk operations run asynchronously and complete via Task Manager (top bar).
View disks
- Open Compute → Disks.
- Review each disk's size, storage pool, and attached VM.
- Select a disk to open its detail page and utilisation.
Create and attach a disk
- Open Compute → Disks.
- Select Create Disk (disabled until a storage pool exists).
- Choose the VM to attach the disk to.
- Enter a disk name and a whole-number size in GB.
- Select the storage pool to place the disk on.
- Optionally inherit the VM's tags, or set tags and a resource group.
- Save.
Expected result: a disk task is queued in Task Manager and the disk attaches to the VM once the worker completes.
Resize or edit a disk
- Open Compute → Disks and open a disk.
- Select Edit.
- Update the name, description, or storage pool.
- Increase the size in GB — size can only be increased, never reduced.
- Save.
Expected result: the disk update is queued in Task Manager.
Delete a disk
- Open Compute → Disks.
- Select one or more disks and choose Delete, or open a disk and select Delete.
- Confirm in the dialog.
Expected result: a disk-delete task is queued in Task Manager.
Best Practices
- Size disks in whole GB within the target storage pool's available capacity.
- Attach a disk to its VM at creation so tags can inherit from the VM.
- Increase disk size only when required — reductions are not supported.
- Confirm the delete task completes in Task Manager before assuming space is freed.
