Resource groups

Purpose

  • Organise related resources under a single named group.
  • Apply key/value tags to every member of the group automatically.
  • Browse a group's members by category: compute, networking, and data protection.
  • Use resource groups as a dimension when breaking down billing.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum permission to view: resourcemanagement.groups.read
  • To create, edit, or delete groups: resourcemanagement.groups.create, resourcemanagement.groups.update, resourcemanagement.groups.delete
  • To manage group tags: resourcemanagement.tags.* (tag changes propagate to all members)
  • Groups are scoped to your active account context.

View resource groups

  1. Open Resource Management → Groups.
  2. Each group is shown as a card with its name, description, and tags.
  3. Select a card to open the group.
  4. Expected result: the group's Details tab shows its name, description, member count, and tags.

Browse group members

A group's members are split across category tabs.

  1. Open Resource Management → Groups and select a group.
  2. Switch between the Details, Compute, Networking, and Data Protection tabs.
  3. On the Compute tab, review members grouped as Virtual Machines, Storage Pools, Disks, Templates, ISOs, and Appliances.
  4. Use the search box in each category to find a member by name or id.
  5. Select a member name to open that resource.

Create a resource group

  1. Open Resource Management → Groups.
  2. Select Create Resource Group.
  3. Enter a Name (required) and an optional Description.
  4. Add tags as key/value pairs; every resource assigned to the group receives these tags automatically.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Expected result: the new group appears in the list and its tags are ready to apply to members.

Edit a resource group

  1. Open Resource Management → Groups and select a group.
  2. On the Details tab, select Edit.
  3. Update the name, description, or tags.
  4. Select Save Changes.
  5. Expected result: changed tags propagate automatically to all member resources.

Delete a resource group

  1. Open Resource Management → Groups and select a group.
  2. Select Delete on the Details tab.
  3. Confirm the group name in the dialog.
  4. Expected result: the group is removed from the list.

Best Practices

  • Use a consistent tag scheme (for example environment, owner, cost centre) so tags stay meaningful across groups.
  • Provide both a key and a value for every tag; key-only rows are rejected.
  • Keep group names descriptive so members are easy to locate.
  • Group resources you provision together so they share tags from the start.
