Storage pools
Manage the pooled storage capacity where virtual disks and VMs are placed.
Storage pools
Purpose
- Define guaranteed storage capacity for VM disks.
- Track guaranteed capacity, usage, and available space per pool.
- See which disks are placed on each pool.
Prerequisites
- Minimum permission to view: compute.storagepools.read
- To create a storage pool: compute.storagepools.create
- To edit a storage pool: compute.storagepools.update
- To delete a storage pool: compute.storagepools.delete
- A storage pool must exist before disks or VMs can be placed on storage.
View storage pools
- Open Compute → Storage Pools.
- Review the overview cards for each quota's storage guarantee, available GB, and percentage used.
- Open a pool to see its summary, resource usage, and the disks placed on it.
Create a storage pool
- Open Compute → Storage Pools.
- Select Create Storage Pool.
- Enter a pool name.
- Enter the storage guarantee as a whole number of GB; it must not exceed available capacity.
- Optionally select a storage quota or parent pool and add tags.
- Save.
Expected result: the storage pool is created and appears in the list, ready for placing disks and VMs.
Edit a storage pool
- Open Compute → Storage Pools and open a pool.
- Select Edit.
- Update the name, capacity, or tags.
- Save.
Delete a storage pool
- Open Compute → Storage Pools.
- Open a pool (or select it in the list) and select Delete.
- Confirm in the dialog.
Best Practices
- Keep utilisation below 80% — the overview turns amber above 80% and red above 90%.
- Create a storage pool before creating disks or VMs that need storage.
- Ensure no disks remain on a pool before deleting it.
