Glossary
Definitions of the terms used across the VMease WebUI and this documentation.
Compute
| Term | Definition |
|---|
| Virtual machine (VM) | A virtual server running on a cluster node. |
| Disk | A virtual disk attached to a VM, placed on a storage pool. |
| Storage pool | Pooled storage capacity from which VM disks are allocated. |
| Template | A reusable VM image used to deploy new VMs quickly. |
| ISO | A bootable installation image that can be mounted to a VM. |
| Appliance | A pre-packaged image deployed as a ready-to-run VM. |
| Image Library | The collection of templates, ISOs and appliances available to deploy. |
| vCPU | A virtual CPU presented to a VM. |
| Compute pool | A pool of physical CPU and memory capacity that quotas draw from. |
Networking
| Term | Definition |
|---|
| Network (VNet) | A virtual network that provides isolated connectivity for VMs. |
| VLAN | A tagged layer-2 segment (ID 1–4094); created under Networks (root only). |
| Subnet | An address range (CIDR) within a network. |
| Firewall | A virtual firewall protecting a network, with rules, NAT, routing and DHCP. |
| SNAT / DNAT | Source / destination network address translation rules on a firewall. |
| OSPF | A dynamic routing protocol configurable on a firewall. |
| VPN | A WireGuard VPN gateway providing secure remote connectivity. |
| CIDR | Notation for an IP range, e.g. 10.0.0.0/24. |
Data protection
| Term | Definition |
|---|
| Backup policy | A schedule and retention rule set applied to VMs. |
| Backup job | A single execution of a backup policy. |
| Restore point | A recoverable snapshot produced by a backup job. |
| Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) | The backup server a storage pool is backed by so it can hold VM backups. |
Organisation, multi-tenancy & access
| Term | Definition |
|---|
| Account / Tenant | An organisational unit that owns resources; a tenant is a child account. |
| Root account | The top-level account with platform-wide administration. |
| Account context | The account you are currently acting within; root users can switch down into a tenant. |
| Quota | A per-tenant allocation of compute or storage capacity (0 or unset = unlimited). |
| Guarantee vs Max | The reserved amount vs the burstable ceiling for a quota dimension. |
| PAYG | Pay-as-you-go: a dimension billed on usage rather than a fixed allocation. |
| Shared resources | Networks, ISOs, appliances or templates assigned from a parent to a tenant. |
| Resource group | A tag-based grouping of resources across compute, networking and data protection. |
| Tag | A key/value label attached to resources for grouping and filtering. |
| User group | A collection of users that roles can be assigned to together. |
| Role | A named set of permissions assigned to users or user groups. |
| Permission | An action-based access key in the form category.module.action — see Permissions reference (click here). |
| RBAC | Role-based access control — the model governing who can do what. |
| Term | Definition |
|---|
| Cluster | A managed group of hypervisor nodes providing compute and storage. |
| Node | A single physical host within a cluster. |
| Physical NIC | A physical network interface on a node, mapped during cluster setup. |
| Syslog destination | A remote target that platform logs are forwarded to. |
| Audit log | The platform-wide record of administrative events. |
| Task | An asynchronous unit of work queued by the API and executed by a worker. |
| Alert | A read-only, root-cause finding raised by the ITSM engine — see Alerts (click here). |
| Import VMs | Bringing existing VMs discovered on a cluster under VMease management. |
| Global VMs | The root-only, cross-account view of every VM, used for migration. |
