Image library

Purpose

• Capture a stopped VM as a reusable template and deploy new VMs from it.
• Import ISO images and attach them to VMs as installation or utility media.
• Import appliances and deploy them as ready-made virtual machines.
• Organise images with resource groups and tags.

Prerequisites

• Minimum permission to view templates: compute.templates.read
• Minimum permission to view ISOs: compute.isos.read
• Minimum permission to view appliances: compute.appliances.read
• To capture a template: compute.templates.create (the source VM must be stopped first).
• To deploy a VM from a template or appliance: compute.vms.create
• To attach an ISO to a VM: compute.vms.create (new VM) or compute.vms.update (existing VM).

Templates

Capture a stopped VM as a template, then launch new VMs from it.

1. Open Compute → Image Library → Templates.
2. Stop the source VM first, then select Configure Template.
3. Choose a stopped VM, enter a template name and optional description, and optionally set a resource group and tags.
4. Select Create Template to queue the capture.
5. To provision from a template, select a single template row and choose Launch Template.
6. Enter the new VM name, choose a compute quota and storage pool, attach at least one network (vNIC), then select Deploy VM.
7. Expected result: the new VM is queued for deployment and appears under Virtual Machines.

ISOs

Import an ISO image, then mount it to a VM.

1. Open Compute → Image Library → ISOs.
2. Select Import ISO.
3. Enter a name and optional description, then attach a .iso file (under 10 GB, file name up to 250 characters).
4. Optionally choose a storage quota, resource group and tags.
5. Select Import ISO to upload; a progress indicator reports upload status.
6. To mount an ISO, open Compute → Virtual Machines and create or edit a VM, enable the attach-ISO option and select the image (choose No ISO to remove any attached image).
7. Expected result: the ISO appears in the list and can be attached when creating or editing a VM.

Appliances

Import an appliance and deploy it as a new VM.

1. Open Compute → Image Library → Appliances.
2. Select Import Appliance and upload the appliance file.
3. Select an appliance, then choose Deploy to create a VM from it.
4. Review the appliance's virtual hardware (vCPUs and RAM), enter a VM name, and choose a compute quota.
5. Assign a storage pool to each disk, attach one or more networks (vNICs), and set the VM importance.
6. Select Deploy.
7. Expected result: the appliance is deployed as a new VM under Virtual Machines.

Best Practices

• Stop a VM before capturing it as a template — running VMs cannot be captured.
• Keep ISO file names under 250 characters and files under 10 GB so the upload is accepted.
• Tag images and assign them to a resource group so they are easy to find and govern.
• Confirm the target compute quota has capacity before deploying a template or appliance.
• Choose a storage pool that supports VM disks when deploying an appliance.
